Complete Series    -    Fright of the Bumblebees    -    The Last Resort    -    Muzzled!    -    The Bogey Man

The first episode in a series like this always has to impress - and this one certainly does!

I know once the run of episodes was completed many rated this lower than the others but I think that’s more the gamers feeling than that of a Wallace and Gromit fan. This is the safest ‘Wallace and Gromit’ episode, set almost entirely in 62 West Wallaby Street and the town centre (note: not ‘center’ as the sign says! Though remarkably that’s the only Americanism I found outside the spelling of some subtitles).

The first section of the game introduces players to how the game works (although every game comes with an ‘instructions’ level for the very basic points) as Gromit tries to get Wallace’s breakfast ready. Much more difficult than it sounds they throw you in at the deep end in terms of puzzles, though they’re not impossible and fun to work out. It’s hugely ‘Wallace and Gromit’ with mad machines preparing eggs and even the Autochef’s head!

Once Wallace’s breakfast is complete the plot really starts. The duo have started a honey business - ‘from bee to you’ - and they receive a huge order for same day delivery! With their pet bees in the basement Wallace works out that the basic formula is ‘more flowers = more honey’, so it’s your job to play as Wallace and find out how to get more flowers. Basically you need a number of ingredients for a quick grow potion, and it’s good fun to work out where to get them all.

Once the delivery has been made the plot notches up as only Wallace and Gromit stories can. Not only did the potion make the plants grow but also the bees... With some laugh-out-loud scenes, and a conclusion suitably madcap and fun yet still retaining that puzzle design, the ending to this game certainly doesn’t disappoint.

The episode also introduces you to (most) of the wonderful new characters to the Wallace and Gromit world. Each one is so unique and individual and they’re all excellently designed in terms of Wallace and Gromit looks. I’d love to see any of them return in a future film!

In short this is an excellent start to the wonderful series and an absolute must-have for any fan. You get to explore the Wallace and Gromit world completely and cleverly, and that’s surely the greatest wish a fan could have?!
