Complete Series - Fright of the Bumblebees - The Last Resort - Muzzled! - The Bogey Man
The second in Telltale’s ‘Grand Adventures’ series of games, ‘The Last Resort’ presents quite a different experience to ‘Fright of the Bumblebees’.
With their beach holiday cancelled by bad weather and their cellar flooded with water Wallace and Gromit decide to make their own holiday resort. When they have finally finished converting the basement Wallace has the bright idea of opening it to the public. The rest of the house is decked out and the doors are opened for people to come and experience the summer resort.
But not everyone is happy - from someone offending guests to someone being attacked by dogs, almost everyone has a complaint. And when all are sorted and they finally join for dinner a real mystery unravels as someone is viciously attacked!
Being set almost entirely in 62 West Wallaby Street the gameplay here could have been a little dull, but surprisingly I never felt that it was. As Wallace you have to get the resort ready by collecting various items - of course not half as simple as it sounds and it requires good puzzle skills to work out what to do (though the solution to the thunder problem is genius! I laughed out loud when I worked it out!). Continuing as Wallace, once the resort is open to the public, you must go around each person sorting their problems. Some problems are easier to solve than others, but each one is satisfyingly clever to do. A lot of thought went into how they all work.
As Gromit you then turn detective and this was the only part of the game I felt was sometimes lacking in something - you were just moving from room to room connecting things but, unlike the earlier section of the game, the solutions weren’t that clever. It seemed just a bit slow to me, not as good as it could have been.
However that’s not to detract from the game as a whole. The redecoration of the house is marvellous, there’s certainly a lot to explore, and the characters are once again superbly crafted. The script and the acting are worthy of high praise. It mixes Wallace and Gromit with the mystery genre and pulls it off better than I had expected.
Maybe it’s not quite as good as ‘Fright of the Bumblebees’ in my opinion, there’s less exploring to be done and it hasn’t got as much of that Wallace and Gromit feeling, but all in all it’s still an essential buy for a fan and something very fun when you have a couple of hours free.
