No cheese for Peter Sallis, Gromit!
“Wallace and Gromit star Peter Sallis confesses he can't stand Wensleydale cheese”

Well... So proclaimed the Telegraph. As the article then reported he didn’t actually say that, but the amazing truth is that - despite Wallace and Gromit single handedly saving the Wensleydale creamery - Peter Sallis hasn’t even tried the cheese!

In fact, despite Wallace being one of cheese’s biggest fans, Peter Sallis hasn’t touched it in decades he revealed during a personal appearance at an arts festival in Prescot Merseyside. "I was actually warned off the stuff a while ago for health reasons, the simple fact is I'm just not mad about cheese. I'd much prefer a nice piece of cake.”

So that’s a bit of a turn up for the books! I’m sure there are many in his position, but rather a surprise coming from someone who has done so much for cheese!

The origins of Wallace and Gromit were also expanded upon when Sallis revealed "I didn't accept [the role of Wallace] straight away. I tried to persuade Nick to get someone else. He wanted a Lancashire accent but I can only do Yorkshire.

"But he insisted so I told him to send me a script so I could audition. So I recorded my version and packed it off to him in the post.

"He got back in touch and told me that was exactly what he was looking for. So in the end he cast me in the role, despite me trying my best to put him off.”

As Nick has said before in interviews, the tape did rather shock him with a ‘posh newsreader’s voice’ but, as we all agree now, Sallis was indeed the perfect man for the job.
